Industry comments on Meaningful Use draft

The July 6 issue of Modern Healthcare includes an article discussing the various industry group's comments on the Meaningful Use Draft criteria. The AHA, AHIMA and AMDIS all note that the very early (2011) inclusion of CPOE is much too aggressive and cite similar concerns that CPOE requires so many underlying components of an EMR, that requiring CPOE from the outset, creates too large a gap from current state to 2011. In reality, many facilities will face 3 -4 years of various implementations before they can properly address CPOE from a technical systems perspective, and that completely ignores the cultural aspect of getting physician's buy-in to use CPOE effectively.
